L. T. WATKINS LTD.
PRINTERS, ETC.
115 TARANAKI ST.,
WELLINGTON
Upper air observations, 1923-1924
Before their move to the corner of Vivian and Willis Sts, L.T. Watkins was located on 115 Taranaki Street. This classic printer's imprint block which figured on many of the company's publications was probably a sold zinc block, possibly electroplated to ensure greater longevity, or a zinc plate mounted type high on a wooden block. It represents a common approach to typographic design of the time, centring the text matter and enclosing it in an ornamented box. It is cooly restrained and lacks the excesses which J.C. Beaglehole later decried when he became Typographic Advisor for the 1940 Centennial Publications project.
