Francis Wynn's The Butterfly Waltz was one of many contemporary popular works published by the musical instrument importers Frederick Jones & Co. of 87 Lambton Quay. The back page of this piece of sheet music gives us some idea of what tunes were hot at the time, including a number by the renowned Australasian violinist, composer, and conductor Alfred Hill. Whitcombe & Tombs set all the text letterpress and would have used photo-engraving or photo-lithography for the music itself, the notation being a notoriously difficult language to set by hand with metal types.
