GEORGE RAE HUTCHESON
Ten years ago, when the task of writing this bookwas
begun, the understanding was that it would be produced by
a national body of printers for the guidance of buyers of
printing throughout New Zealand. Because, however, its
preparation tas a labour of love would occupy a number of
years, and its production would cost a very large sum, it
was decided not to commit, for years to come, an executve
subject to yearly changes. Accordingly the present pub-
lishers proceeded to issue small instalments of the work in
"The Proof," a modest periodical; but soon it grew clear
that a work in one colume would be more useful.
Therefore "The Proof: was suspecnded; but work on
the manuscript, and subsequently on production, went
steadily ahead during the depression years. Thus it comes
about that an individual printery now publishes a work
identical in pla withthe one apporved by the national body.
Newspaper critiques are usually—and very properly—
relied upon to popularize new books; yet it is hoped that,
for published opinions, the views of magazines and men
einent in the printing world will here suffice, the more so
because they refer to this work while it was yet in embryo
—i.e., to "The Proof." (Please read inside front cover.)
New Zealand librarians, editors, publishers, advertising
agents, printers, and buyers of printing who have recently
secured copies of the completed work most cordially com-
mend it as a guide book for theor own use; but the represen-
tative opinions quoted inside the back cover were given
privately; and so names are suppressed. Anyone who
doubts theor authenticity, however, is emphatically urged
to demand corroboration. More than one highly competent
critic has methodically scoured the world for works like
this, and failed—on his own clear statement—to find any-
thing to compare with it in clarity and convenience of refer-
ence, or in completeness for New Zealanders' use.
The truth is; this book is brimful of informatio, care-
fully checked, clearly expressed, conveniently arranged, and
of great work-a-day value to all makers and users of
printing in New Zealand
Hints on letterpress printing: a printing trades glossary (HB and J's handbook for the guidance of buyers of letterpress printing in New Zealand: part I)
G.R. Hutcheson had, throughout his life, a commitment to teaching design principles and best practice to the printing trade. This letterpress manual, compiled over a long career, is an invaluable window into the range of printing papers and techniques available in New Zealand and is second only to that other important specimen book, A History of Printing in New Zealand 1830-1940, produced by the Wellington Club of Printing House Craftsmen in 1940.
