THE HUIA SONG

The sheet music items held in the Sheet Music Archive of NZ and any scanned or photocopied images of these items remain the property of the Archive and David Dell. Please see Conditions of Use.

This multi-plate photo-chromolithograph harkens back to the style, layout and typography of the late 19th and early 20thc. The artist, F.H. Shiny, has signed his work to the left of the maiden's heel. The stereotyped image of the Maori woman makes no attempt to render costume or physical anatomy accurately and represents a commodification of Maori common to the period and not just reserved for sheet music.
