          <l>Intricate interchange of shadow on the dreaming hills.</l>
          <l>Soluble colour, moss-green by purple-grey penetrated,</l>
          <l>Brown into blue turning, brief gleam of gorse gilding</l>
          <l>Softened solidity of sheep-sustaining access,</l>
          <l>Of water-fashioned gully soft decline.</l>
        </lg>
        <lg type="verse">
          <l>Eonial form. Ephemeral coloration.</l>
          <l>Ascribable to slow, hesitant, soft clouds hanging</l>
          <l>Low overhead, brooding, meditating rain, rain.</l>
          <l>At footside, spherical soft clover-head,</l>
          <l>Whitish and murry-shaded, spicy.…</l>
          <l>Into the dream there crept a little bird-voice,</l>
          <l>Again, again, again insinuating his small essential song.</l>
        </lg>

          <l><hi rend="i">Soliloquy’s no song</hi>, once spake a pundit. But </l>
          <l rend="pad-left">  not guilty, Sir!</l>
          <l>Not self-sufficient, soul, nor little hidden bird.</l>

          <l>of diurnal subsistence escape delight-dimming screen.</l>
        </lg>
        <lg type="verse">
          <l>The morning air was full of the cries of humanity active,</l>
          <l>red sparks rising up to the whiter light of silence;</l>
          <l>the eternal mountains, aloof, maintained their endless procession;</l>
          <l>like tender bloom on curve of immature peach-skin</l>
          <l>clung fugitive frost to the foot of winter-green gullies;</l>
          <l>shone, sun-glossed gold and silver, the satiny tussock.…</l>
        </lg>
        <lg type="verse">
          <l>I kissed the chains that bind, the body to bounty of earthly scene.</l>
        </lg>

        </head>
        <lg type="verse">
          <l>We said: there will surely be hawthorn out</l>
          <l>down in the sun-holding folds of the hills by the sea;</l>
          <l>but suddenly snow had forestalled the thorns there,</l>
          <l>death-white and cold on their boughs hung</l>
          <l>the festival wreaths.</l>
        </lg>
        <lg type="verse">
          <l>It is all one. The same hand scatters the blossoms</l>
          <l>of winter and spring-time. The black-robed psalmodist,</l>
          <l>traversing swiftly the silent landscape like Azrael,</l>
          <l>echoed in clear repetition his well-tuned antiphon;</l>
          <l>a waking bugle it might be, a passing bell,</l>
          <l>of life, death, life, life telling: it is all one.</l>

          <l>Everything was white this morning.</l>

          <l>Grey clouds, light-infused, conveyed the morning,</l>
          <l rend="pad-left">Covering with whiteness the wide sky overhead.</l>
        </lg>
        <lg type="verse">
          <l>White, past belief, the high and snowy mountains,</l>
          <l rend="pad-left">Phantom-like, visionary; whiteness upon whiteness</l>
          <l>Of frozen foam from far celestial fountains</l>
          <l rend="pad-left">Suffused with soft and universal brightness.</l>

          <l>Everything was white, this morning,</l>
          <l rend="pad-left">Untroubled, luminous and tranquil pure;</l>
          <l>Bright as an affianced bride, adorning</l>

          <l>Not forget, then, this scintillant early sunshine</l>
          <l>Playing upon polished new-sprung leaves,</l>
          <l>Playing on subtle-shadowed tussock bosses</l>
          <l>And stippled spring-grassed slopes of gorse-trimmed hills,</l>
          <l>Giving to plain-spread dwellings definition,</l>
          <l>Lighting to emerald willow-bordered fields,</l>
          <l>Painting lapis-lazuli the wandering mountains,</l>
          <l>Shining to diamonds the far mountain-snows.</l>
        </lg>
        <lg type="verse">
          <l>I may forget the bees’ insistent bourdon</l>
          <l>In the willow-flower by the river, the earthy smell,</l>
          <l>Alien lark’s carol, little native’s sweet da-capo,</l>
          <l>Joyous scents of clover, wattle, furze;</l>
          <l>But let me not forget, but lifelong be recorded</l>
          <l>Upon my registering eyes’ memorial screen</l>
          <l>This brilliancy of green, blue, white, and again blue,</l>
          <l>The Spring-purged sky’s dazzle,</l>
          <l>The first sun’s brightness, the golden lightness,</l>
          <l>This glitter, this glory, this morning jubilee.</l>

        </head>

          <l>Captured and gentled, harnessed to use of man;</l>
          <l>  Harrowed and harvested, charted to human hold;</l>
          <l>With a price branded, noble and savage plain,</l>
          <l>  Hereto have untold ages swept down water and stones.</l>
          <l rend="pad-left">Quarried and roaded, sown with essaying grass-seed,</l>
          <l rend="pad-left">Sown with fleecy herds, scaled by defying fences,</l>
          <l rend="pad-left">Dog-watched and fire-purged, free, tempestuous mountains,</l>
          <l>  Hereto uncounted centuries have rolled down boulders and snow.</l>
        </lg>
        <lg type="verse">
          <l>Blade-sprung paddocks and spaces of pregnant plough,</l>
          <l>  The man-disposed prospect; and, rounds of misty green,</l>
          <l>Soft-spun as seed-balls adrift on level fields,</l>
          <l>  Willows laced about the course of water-races and streams;</l>
          <l rend="pad-left">Gold-traced pastures, incrustations on foot-hills</l>
          <l rend="pad-left">Of bloom-bright gorse-banks, divisional bounds all golden,</l>
          <l rend="pad-left">Into the glow of molten gold we gaze with eyes undazzled,</l>
          <l>  And heady fume of this candescence, still undrunken, breathe.</l>

          <l>Now is the year’s prize, and slow guerdon of tilth;</l>
          <l>  Now is replenishment of fine young lambs and calves,</l>

          <l>  Beside the yellow shield of furze on verdant ground at large;</l>
          <l>    And all is pavilioned with sheer celestial azure</l>
          <l>    Hazing the far alps, their turquoise and silver;</l>
          <l>    And: Life, life, resurgent life! Sings the exalted skylark,</l>
          <l>  As on the battlements of spring he mounts his joyous guard.</l>
        </lg>
        <lg type="verse">
          <l>Hereunto the seafaring forefathers were come;</l>
          <l>Unknowing, to this dower were we brought from warding womb;</l>
          <l>Even to this earth-response, farms, and teeming plain,</l>
          <l>Terrestrial stress, recurrent fields, service of sun and rain.</l>
          <l>  There is no more richness, no riper consummation</l>
          <l rend="pad-left">Of terrene fate than this conjunction with earth-form,</l>
          <l>  Search you the wide seas, or fly the empyrean,</l>
          <l rend="pad-left">Unresting spirits; unto earth the earth-born</l>
          <l>Must return, as spiring lark nestles to sod again.</l>

        </head>
        <lg type="verse">
          <l>The great south wind has covered with cloud the whole of the river-plain,</l>
          <l>soft white ocean of foaming mist, blotting out, billowing</l>
          <l>fast to the east, where Pacific main surges on vaster bed.</l>
        </lg>
        <lg type="verse">
          <l>But here, on the hills, south wind unvapoured encounters the sunshine,</l>
          <l>lacing and interlocking, the invisible effervescence</l>
          <l>you almost hear, and the laughter of light and air at play overhead.</l>
        </lg>
        <lg type="verse">
          <l>Seabirds fly free; see the sharp flash of their underwings!</l>
          <l>and high lifted up to the north, the mountains, the mighty, the white ones</l>
          <l>rising sheer from the cloudy sea, light-crowned, establishéd.</l>
        </lg>
        <lg type="verse">
          <l>This sparkling day is the Lord’s day. Let us be glad and rejoice in it;</l>
          <l>for he cometh, he cometh to judge and redeem his beautiful universe,</l>
          <l>and holds in his hands all worlds, all men, the quick and the dead.</l>
        </lg>

          <l>clanking my manacles</l>
          <l>I plod stubbornly</l>
          <l>in stony dust.</l>

          <l>Sudden to right-hand</l>
          <l>on mournful east sky,</l>
          <l>steel-grey sky, gun-metal sea,</l>
          <l>image of hidden light</l>
          <l>lying in level lines,</l>
          <l>beyond the lowland,</l>
          <l>on dun sky and sea.</l>

          <l>Quick to memory comes</l>
          <l>Clement’s Inn Hall set</l>
          <l>with show of pewter plate</l>
          <l>polished to proper sheen,</l>
          <l>grey of silver and slate;</l>
          <l>between riches and penury</l>
          <l>pride of sober mean.</l>

          <l>Next, on the left-hand,</l>
          <l>pattern set forth defined</l>
          <l>of bold magnolia leaves,</l>
          <l>gold on the underside,</l>
          <l>on face burnished green,</l>
          <l>giving back silver gleam</l>
          <l>from grey-muffled sky.</l>

          <l>to Moses in dreadful mount.</l>

          <l>Gaol-breakers from routine, we halted our four-cylindered</l>
          <l>trusty and time-worn chariot upon a yielding greensward</l>
          <l>beside the random shingle of a sequestered by-path</l>
          <l>through land half-unredeemed and half-subdued by settlers,</l>
          <l>and with the sweet perfume of lawless gorse invested,</l>
          <l>upleaning to the wall of tawny, rock-strewn Port Hills.</l>
        </lg>
        <lg type="verse">
          <l>Untroubled, slow milch-kine, with prizeworthy rich udders,</l>
          <l>behind us nuzzled softly among man-selected grasses</l>
          <l>in the shadow of a tree-dark, wind-forbidding hill-spur;</l>
          <l>and we looked upon a piece of planted orchard, spring-green,</l>
          <l>sunlit, sheltered, where, a procession of bridesmaids,</l>
          <l>twelve young quince-trees quivered their blossom-sprinkled garlands.</l>
        </lg>
        <lg type="verse">
          <l>Two baskets, osier-fashioned by soldiers invalided</l>
          <l>from the last and vastest of our vaunted armageddons,</l>
          <l>furnished convenient rations for a pretty meal alfresco;</l>
          <l>refreshed, we fell to sharing and collating the material</l>
          <l>proper to the occasion of our impromptu festival,</l>
          <l>the looked-for, newly delivered, fortnightly foreign letters.</l>
        </lg>

        <lg type="verse">
          <l>Becalmed in anamnesis, we gave ourselves to silence;</l>
          <l>on past, present, and future I gazed with widening compass.</l>
          <l>and dipped with questing plummet deep in darksome thought-ponds;</l>
          <l>considering that those composed and sweetly-sleeping hill-slopes</l>
          <l>were but the mellowed refuse from infernal furnaces</l>
          <l>flinging, the other day, their molten boulders heavenwards.</l>
        </lg>
        <lg type="verse">
          <l>And that from this clear and cloud-bedecked blue ceiling</l>
          <l>might shortly rain down fearful and deadly fire and brimstone,</l>
          <l>(they say) from long fore-planned and fore-damned machinations,</l>
          <l>fruit of our most elaborate rationalisations of hatred</l>
          <l>and justifications of terror, prepared for the hara-kiri</l>
          <l>of earth’s loftiest masterpiece, lore-drunken humanity.</l>
        </lg>
        <lg type="verse">
          <l>But for a midge’s moment, between the noble unconscious</l>
          <l>mineral uproar, the mute half-conscious on-tending</l>
          <l>river of bioplast, and our immense abolishings,</l>
          <l>sapient obliterations, mutual annihilations,</l>
          <l>before the ultimate crime, the grand triumphal felony,</l>
          <l>the last and final blasting of fragile-flowered life-tree.</l>

          <l>But for a brief interval, this bread broken in amity,</l>
          <l>this notice of a goldfinch flitting among the leafage</l>
          <l>of stripling quince, whose shell-pink decoration</l>
          <l>sways very gently on delicate shell-blue canopy;</l>
          <l>but for a brief moment this balm and opiate of song-lark</l>
          <l>filling with heedless ecstasy the calm precarious sky…</l>

          <l>All through the sun-possessed long afternoon of midsummer drowsing,</l>
          <l>the rustle of leaves has solaced my ear-sense, the green-blue, green-blue</l>
          <l>exhilaration of lively leafage on sky-spaces eye-sense</l>
          <l>amused, as the crossing of elegant segmented wreathe of wistaria</l>
          <l>and tend of interlaced spirals wavering lightwards and woven</l>

          <l>The thousand lamps of the plain burn with subdued gold;</l>
          <l>On northern bound apparent, frozen, mountain snows</l>
          <l>Seal with their immobility slumbering earth’s repose.</l>

          <l>The frail young moon withdraws her furtive lamp.</l>

          <l>Now low, now loud, moans the night-long nor’-wester</l>
          <l>Let loose upon us from outer caverns of darkness,</l>
          <l>Bellowing wild as one in torment, now lulled, now mute.</l>

          <l>Wail of wind takes words in burden of dark menace:</l>
          <l><hi rend="i">Baseless and soon to be dissolved is the great cosmos</hi>;</l>

            <hi rend="i">The planetary fabric endures but a short space.</hi>

          <l>This lethal dirge drugs me, melting my limitations;</l>
          <l>I lean upon the liberation, yet do not lose myself;</l>

          <l>Gives way to silence and soft adverting noises,</l>

          <l>Prepare us for the familiar, and shaken from trances</l>
          <l>Of wind-bewitched night-time, I am hearing, awake,</l>

          <l>And resting earth, her increase having yielded,</l>
          <l>Bathes her swart limbs, placid, in the morning sun.</l>

          <l>To these gilt beams, all thine attention;</l>

          <l>But the birds are commissioned to remit messages;</l>
          <l>But every tree a whispering, mysterious harp holds;</l>
          <l>The sea has a voice, rivers are everywhere melodious,</l>
          <l>And there are certain earth-mounds,</l>
          <l>There are old mountain hollows charged with oracles…</l>
          <l>Sometimes, while the wind changes, we may hear sounds</l>
          <l>We have waited for, our hearts being tuned secretly</l>
          <l>To ultramundane stave.</l>
          <l>They were frighted, heard they no imperial</l>
          <l>Still voice hidden in the breeze</l>
          <l>Shall say to mandatary Time, obsequious:</l>
