        <p rend="indent">In answer to your questions:
          (1/ Re <hi rend="u">"He Tina Toa."</hi> I have
          <lb/>never heard of a Maori with
          <lb/>such a name, &amp; I think
          <lb/>it <del>is</del> should be
          <lb/>spelled "Tin<hi rend="u">o</hi>", not Tina.
          <lb/>"He Tino Toa" means <del>literal</del>
          <lb/>literally "A very Warrior"
          <lb/>or "A Hero indeed" —
          <lb/>a warrior of superlative skill
          <lb/>and bravery. It's
          <lb/>descriptive, &amp; not a
          <lb/>personal name.
        </p>

        <p>2 Re <hi rend="u">"Ko Wakatere Kohukohu"</hi>
          <lb/>"Ko" is not part of the name.
          <lb/>of the <hi rend="u">tiki</hi> — it simply  <del><unclear>me</unclear></del>
          <lb/>means "this is."
          <lb/>The name is probably that of
          <lb/>some ancestor — it was
          <lb/>usual to iwi ancestral 
          <lb/>names to <hi rend="u">tikis</hi>, etc.
          <lb/>"Waka-tere" literally is
          <lb/>"swift canoe" but probably
          <lb/>it should be spelled with
          <lb/>an "h" — <hi rend="u">whakatere</hi>,
          <lb/>meaning "hasten". I have seen
          <lb/><add place="left">one of</add> <name key="name-100065" type="person">Hone Heke</name>'s letters — his
          <lb/>own handwriting — &amp; he
          <lb/>often dropped the "h" when he
          <lb/>should have put it in —
          <lb/>a habit learned from the
          <pb xml:id="n3" n="3" corresp="#Fil002c"/>
          <lb/>missionaries — I believe the
          <lb/><choice><abbr>Rev.</abbr><expan>Reverend</expan></choice> <name key="name-209410" type="person">R. Taylor</name>, who
          <lb/>had adopted the pronunciation
          <lb/>of <del>those</del> the "cockneys" of <choice><abbr>N.Z.</abbr><expan>New Zealand</expan></choice>,
          <lb/>the <add place="supralinear">south</add> <name key="name-110569" type="place">Taranaki</name> &amp; and <name key="name-008123" type="place">Wanganui</name>
          <lb/>people.
        </p>
        <p>"Kohukohu" <del>means</del> <add place="supralinear">has many</add>
          <lb/>meanings (see <name key="name-209653" type="person">Williams</name>'
          <lb/><name key="name-122727" type="work">Dictionary</name>), but it is
          <lb/>not possible to give the
          <lb/>origin of the name without
          <lb/>reference to some of
          <lb/><name key="name-100065" type="person">Hone Heke</name>'s people
        </p>
        <lb/>
        <p rend="indent">3 I have not seen
          <lb/><name key="name-124191" type="person">Rysedale</name>'s account of <name key="name-209440" type="person">Von <lb/>Tempsky</name>'s end. I knew <add place="right"><!-- Add  hand="HF" to add element once we've moved to P5 -->the</add>
          <lb/><add place="left"><!-- add hand="HF" attribute to add once moved to P5 -->late</add> <name key="name-124192" type="person">C. B. Montrose</name>, who was an
          <lb/>Imperial soldier (<name key="name-124193" type="organisation">65<hi rend="sup">th.</hi> <choice><abbr>Regt.</abbr><expan>Regiment</expan></choice></name> I think)

          <lb/>before he took to <unclear>immoralism</unclear>.
          <lb/>I should like to see the
          <lb/>narrative.
        </p>
        <p rend="indent">I know that <choice><abbr><name key="name-209440" type="person">Von T.</name></abbr><expan>Von Temspky</expan></choice> was
          <lb/>not shot from a tree.
          <lb/>There are many versions of his
          <lb/>end published, &amp; the <hi rend="u">pakeha</hi> ones
          <lb/>are mostly wrong. I <del>have</del>
          <lb/><add place="left">obtained</add> good narratives some years ago
          <lb/>from two of the <add place="supralinear">six or seven</add> Maoris who
          <lb/>fired at him at a few yards
          <lb/>distance — they were not
          <lb/>in a tree but crouching on 
          <lb/>the ground beside the little watercourse
          <lb/>at the <hi rend="u">pa</hi>. One of these
          <lb/>men, <name key="name-124195" type="person">Whakowhiria</name>, was the man
          <lb/>who shot <choice><abbr><name key="name-209440" type="person">Von T.</name></abbr><expan>Von Temspky</expan></choice>, &amp; the other
          <lb/>told me he tomahawked him <add place="right">some</add>
          <lb/><add place="mixed">little time later</add> <del>so</del> as he lay dying or dead.
          <lb/>There had been some firing from the
          <lb/><hi rend="u">rata</hi>-tree brambles, &amp; from the
          <pb xml:id="n5" n="5" corresp="#Fil002e"/>
          <lb/>hollow loopholed butts &amp; <del>the</del>
          <lb/>one or two big <del>trees</del>
          <lb/><hi rend="u">rata</hi>, but <name key="name-209440" type="person">Von Tempsky</name>
          <lb/>was shot from the ground.
          <lb/><del>I have</del> <name key="name-209105" type="person">Colonel Roberts</name> has
          <lb/>given me the best narrative
          <lb/>of the affair from the
          <lb/><hi rend="u">pakeha</hi> viewpoint.
          <lb/><del>Of the</del> <name key="name-124191" type="person">Rysedale</name>'s narrative
          <lb/>may throw some new light
          <lb/>upon it but not unless he
          <lb/>was an actual eyewitness
          <lb/>of <choice><abbr><name key="name-209440" type="person">Von T.</name></abbr><expan>Von Tempsky</expan></choice>'s fall.
          <lb/>I should like to see it.
