If it were left to me the
tables would not be buffed,
the Tom cat, fat and old,
would eat out of the fridge,
the plants, all of whom I
named Valerie, would
be left to spread
roots into the carpet, through
the floor, and into the earth
as the previous owners had done,
the ashtrays would lie empty
in shiny stacks in a narrow
cupboard in the kitchen,
waiting for someone to use them
to hold chocolate wrappers,
or a collection of small
coloured beads
to sit in a 12-year-old’s
bedroom, between Snoopy
and a painted Fimo head on
the window sill.
