Lapwing

I was like the lapwing—
a strange bird, from

‘leap’ and ‘wink’—
crested in stubble, or

black in flocks rising. How
do I know? You

bought the guide
by which I might identify.

Winter I stay, they
just up and fly. But

look in the book—
a leap, a wink—

there they are. They
look me in the eye.
