After a poem by Donald Justice, After a phrase abandoned by Wallace Stevens

The mountain stands
at the end of the street,
remote as ever
from the town.

The recession
deepens. Shutters
go up, businesses
shut down.

The mountain
retains its grandeur
for the passing
tourist trade.

The locals,
at vanishing
point, view
their prospects fade.
