I disengage myself

for Mary

This particular mother said to me,
'See, you are not alone,'
but I walked away
because I could not put a sentence together.

I took off my hat and held it as it was overcast.
I tried to walk naturally.

Four thin branches of green leaves
wept down across the path.
I passed through between the third and fourth.

The whole flat sky felt about a foot
above the top of my head.
