Past and Present, and Men of the Times.

Mr. C. H. Mills

Mr. C. H. Mills. —Before closing my manuscript I must say a few words about one of our most energetic and persevering gentlemen, Mr. C. H. Mills, M.H.R., who was born in Nelson in 1844, his father being one of the earliest settlers in that Province. He was educated at the public schools in Wellington, where, at an early age, he showed special aptitude. After leaving school he was seafaring and mining for some years. In 1871 he settled down in Havelock, Marlborough, and married. He was a member of the Provincial Council and many other bodies, and is now a member of the Marlborough Road and Education Boards. He contested the Waimea-Picton seat for the House of Representatives, and was defeated by a small number of votes; in 1890 he again stood for Waimea-Picton seat and was elected, and in 1893 was elected again as member for Waimea-Sounds. Since his advent to Parliament Mr. Mills has filled the important positions of Chairman of the A to L Committee for two years and Government Whip for four years, and is very popular and spoken of in the highest terms.
