Tuatara: Volume 28, Issue 1, August 1985

Since the above was written Mr R. H. Taylor has visited the Auckland Islands and made the interesting observation that bellbirds feed on honeydew produced by scale insects on Dracophyllum longifolium. He writes: “in some places (particularly Figure-of-Eight Island, Carnley Harbour) where belibirds were abundant, honeydew appeared to be the main food source for bellbirds during mid-February (1985). If honeydew production throughout the year is along similar lines to that in South Island beech forests (Gaze and Clout, N.Z.J. Ecol. 1983) then it could be the main nectar source for birds on Campbell and Auckland Islands for most of the year.” It is possible, then, that the white-eyes on Campbell Island mentioned above as searching branches and limbs of Dracophyllum, were taking honeydew.

From Campbell Island Mr G. Taylor (pers. comm.) reports that from May to August 1984 flowering was common in Dracophyllum longifolium in some areas but elsewhere no plants flowered. In D. scoparium winter flowering was less frequent.
