Mr. Joseph Dransfield was elected to the Council in September, 1870, and became the first Mayor of the City under the Municipal Corporations Act, being voted to the chair by his fellow Councillors. It was not til 1875 that the Mayor was elected by the ratepayers. After vacating the Mayoral Chair in December, 1873, he continued a member of the Council till the 15th of March, 1877, when he resigned his seat. See “Ex-Mayors.”
