Mr. Patrick Lynch Dignan

Mr. Patrick Lynch Dignan, J.P., Assistant Inspector of the Bank of New Zealand, has been connected with this great institution for over thirty years. He is the second son of the late Hon. P. Dignan, M.L.C., and was born at Auckland on the 26th of November, 1848. Educated privately by Mr. R. J. O's Sullivan, late inspector of schools in Auckland, he joined the Bank in July, 1864, as junior. Two years later he became teller and assistant at Ngarua Wahia, and was afterwards transferred to the West Coast. From 1868 to 1876, with the exception of four years when he went farming during the busy days on the Thames, Mr. Dignan was accountant on that goldfield. In the latter year he was promoted to the position of agent at Cromwell, and in 1881, manager at Hokitika, and has since been manager at many important branches of the Bank, and done a good deal of inspection work at various points. For six years prior to his appointment as assistant inspector in 1895, Mr. Dignan was manager of the Auckland Branch. During the seventies, the subject of this notice was Lieutenant of No. 2 Hauraki Volunteers at the Thames. He saw a good deal of the native trouble during the Waikato war, and was at the West Coast and Ohinemuri goldfields in the early days. As a director in many prominent West Coast mines, and afterwards of several large page 511 mercantile concerns in Auckland, he did good service. While on a visit to London, Mr. Dignan helped to register the renowned Waihi Gold Mining Company. In 1889 Mr. Dignan was married to Kathleen, daughter of Mr. A. S. Aldrich, C.E., secretary in chief of Japanese railways, of Yokohama, Japan, and has two sons.
