Captain Alfred Bruce

Captain Alfred Bruce, of the Anchor Steam Shipping Company's s.s. “Charles Edward,” was born at Newcastle-on-Tyne in 1840. He served an apprenticeship of five years on vessels trading to the Mediterranean and the East. Captain Bruce came to New Zealand in 1861 in the ship “Light of the Age” with a cargo of horses for the Army. Settling at Nelson in 1862, he was employed on various vessels engaged in the coastal trade for a period of ten years, when he entered the service of the Anchor Steam Shipping Company as mate of the s.s. “Kennedy,” From that time he has remained in the employ of the Company, being appointed captain of the s.s. “Wallace” about 1883, and since taking command of various steamers belonging to the Company.
