Mr. Robert James Creighton

Mr. Robert James Creighton represented Parnell in the House of Representatives in 1865, Newton from 1869 to 1870, and Eden from 1871 to 1875. He was born in London derry, Ireland, and served an apprenticeship on a Londonderry newspaper. In 1861 he arrived in Auckland, and became editor of the “Southern Cross” newspaper, which became a brilliant success under his management. He was a member of the Auckland Provincial Council, and for some time Provincial Secretary. During his residence in the Colony he edited, in addition to the “Southern Cross,” the “New Zealand Herald,” “Otago Guardian,” and “New Zealand Times. Mr. Creighton afterwards removed to San Francisco, where he was agent for the Government of New Zealand. During a short residence at Honolulu, he became a member of the Government of Hawaii. He died suddenly at San Francisco, leaving a widow, a son, and a daughter. His son is a lawyer of note at Honolulu.
