Mr. Thomas Bannatyne Gillies sat in the House of Representatives for Auckland City West from 1871 to 1874, and for Mangonui in 1870. He had previously, as an Otago man, sat in the House in 1860 as member for Dunedin Country, and as member for Bruce from 1861 to 1864. Mr. Gillies was for a short time Attorney-General in the Domett Ministry of 1862–63, Postmaster-General and Secretary for Crown Lands in the Whitaker-Fox Ministry of 1863–64, and Colonial Treasurer in the Stafford Ministry of 1872. He is referred to in another article as one of the Superintendents of the Province of Auckland.
