St. James' Presbyterian Church

St. James' Presbyterian Church, Wellington Street. This building is of wood, of Gothic style with transept and spire, and is seated to accommodate six hundred people. It cost £3,300. It was erected in 1865, and the minister of the congregation at that time was the late Rev. James Hill, who afterwards became the first Presbyterian minister at the Thames on the opening of the goldfields. The present minister was inducted in February, 1869. The congregation is prosperous and energetic, and consists of over 260 communicants and nearly as many adherents. The manse is conveniently situated behind the church. Besides these buildings, the congregation in 1879 erected a substantial brick hall with Gothic windows, ante-rooms, etc., for the accommodation of the Sunday school and congregational meetings. This latter building, which can accommodate six hundred people, cost £1,700, including the site. The congregation attending St. James' church has been the largest of its denomination in the city, and the church's properties are all free of debt.
