The Cyclopedia of New Zealand [Auckland Provincial District]

[introduction]

page break

Auckland has a large number of medical practitioners, but it cannot be termed an unhealthy city. It is true that the people generally have not the rosy, robust appearance of their southern neighbours, but this is mainly, if not wholly, due to the influence of the climate. The city's medical practitioners are, as a class, men of educated ability, and some of them are specialists of the highest order; but as medical men, as an organised body, take the view that members of the profession should not be parties to the publication of particulars concerning themselves, personally or professionally, it follows that, in a number of cases, only names and addresses are given in this section of the Cyclopedia. Many chemists, also for reasons personal to themselves, have withheld particulars from the compilers, and, in such cases, only names and addresses are given. Dentists are mentioned much more in detail. Under the circumstances, the section, as a whole, is as complete as the compilers can make it, and, apart from positive information useful for immediate purposes, it gives data whereby a student of the subject may arrive at fairly trust-worthy conclusions concerning the healthiness of Auckland and the health of its people at the present time.
