Mr. J. P. Du Moulin

Mr. J. P. Du Moulin arrived in New Zealand in 1839, and was the second son of Dr. J. A. on Moulin, sometime senior surgeon of H.M. 50th Regiment. Mr. du Moulin was an officer of the commissariat staff, and served in the Heke war of 1845, and in the native wars in Wellington province, and at Wanganui. He was also in the Taranaki war of 1860, and the Waikato campaign of 1863–4. In his young days he was fond of sport, and rode as a gentleman rider in the military sports of the garrison, at Potter's Paddock, which was then the Auckland racecourse. Shortly after the Waikato campaign Mr. du Moulin retired from the service, and went into private life. He died in his 85th year, on the 1st of January, 1901, at his residence, Symonds Street, Auckland, and was survived by his widow, one son, and two grandchildren. His son, Major Louis du Moulin, went with the 1st Royal Sussex Regiment to South Africa.
