Mr. William Winstone

Mr. William Winstone, Mount Albert, is the founder of the well-known business of Messrs W. and G. Winstone, Forwarding Agents and Coal Merchants, Auckland. He was born at Barron Gurney, Somersetshíre, England, in 1843, and after being educated at Failand school, turned his attention to farming pursuits. On coming to New Zealand in 1860, by the ship “Spray of the Ocean,” he page 443 began farming and contracting at Auckland, and followed these callings prosperously for three years and a half. He then started the large business now carried on by Messrs W. and G. Winstone. The prosperity of the firm was progressive from the first, and in 1869 Mr. Winstone was joined by his brother, Mr. George Winstone, from Queensland, with whom he entered into partnership, trading as Messrs W. and G. Winstone. In 1870, Mr. Winstone's sight was most seriously impaired, through an unfortunate explosion of gunpowder, and he also received other severe bodily injuries. He was compelled to seek the advice of spcialists in the Old Country, and his eyesight was partially restored. However, he retired from the firm in 1895, leaving his son as his successor in the business, and he now lives in his beautiful home at Mount Albert, where he has leisure and opportunity to devote himself to pursuits of usefulness. Mr. Winstone has been for three years a member of the Mount Albert Road Board. He married Miss Ellen Sperrin, of Backwell, Somersetshire, and they have a family of one son and one daughter. As stated, the son, Mr. Fred Winstone, succeeded his father in the business.
