Cheal, Peter Edward, J.P., A.M.N., Z.M.E., M.N.Z.I.S., Mining Engineer and Authorised Surveyor, Government Life Insurance Buildings, Queen Street, Auckland. P.O. Box. 478. Telephone, 1015. Bankers, Bank of New South Wales. Cable address, “Adit,” Auckland. Mr. Cheal hails from London, where he was born in 1846. and claims to have the “freedom” of that city by birthright. Educated at the City of London School, he served his indentures as a surveyor, and came to New Zealand in 1864. Joining the Government Survey staff soon after his arrival, he was connected with the transport department during the Waikato War. From 1867 to 1870 he was engaged in his profession at the Thames Goldtields, and when the interest in mining subsided, entered into native land surveys. For twelve page 467 years, from 1874 onwards, he was again on the Government Survey staff. On the opening of the Walmate Plains, Taranaki district, he was in charge of a staff of six surveyors with working parties of 100 men, who were harassed and carted off the plains in bollock drays by the notorious Ts Whiti. Mr. Cheal then joined the Hawera Cavalry Volunteers, and served during the native troubles of that period; afterwards returning to the Waimate Plains with 400 Armed Constabulary, he ran the road lines under covering parties of Armed Constabulary, towards Parihaka, under Colonel Roberts, N.Z.C. On the restoration of peace, he returned to Auckland, and was placed in charge of the Government Survey Staff in the Thames district. He shortly afterwards retired from the service, and practised his profession on his own account. He He open his present offices in 1895, and has had a fair share of mining surveying business since that date. It may be mentioned that Mr. Cheal has, during his career in the Colony, collected some fine and very interesting specimens of ores and minerals, which may be inspected at his office.
