Churton, William Henry

Churton, William Henry, F.S.A.A. (Eng.), Incorporated Accountant and Mining Agent, 28 Shortland Street, Auckland. P.O. Box, 349. Telephone, 819. Mr. Churton's offices are fitted up in excellent taste, and consist of a general office, board room, and private office, three clerks being employed. The proprietor is very well known as one of Auckland's leading accountants. He is a son of the late Rev. J. F. Churton, one of the earliest settlers in the Colony, and the Colonial Chaplain. Born at Auckland in 1846, the subject of this notice was educated in his native town. He first gained an insight into banking affairs, being for a number of years in the service of the National Bank, and subsequently receiving the appointment of Inspector of the Colonial Bank; this position he held till 1889, when he decided to start in business as an incorporated accountant and auditor. His services are much in request, and he holds the position of auditor for the Kauri Timber Company, Ltd., the Devonport Steam Ferry Company, Ltd., the Captain Cook Brewery Company, the Auckland Club, and the Auckland Dioeese of the Church of England. He is accountant to the Orphan Home Trust Board and Leslie's Orphanage Trust. In the Maori War, during 1863–4, Mr. Churton served as a Volunteer, and saw active service at Wairoa in 1863. He has always taken a prominent part in church matters in the Colony, having been a member of the Diocesan Synod of the Church of England from 1880 to 1895, and of the General Synod of New Zealand in 1886 and 1889. A member of the Auckland Chamber of Mines, Mr. Churton is legal manager for some twenty gold mining companies, both English and colonial.
