Reid, John Maloney

page 606

Reid, John Maloney, Farmer, Hukatere Farm, near Hohoura, North Cape, Auckland. Mr. Reid has a fine freehold property of 400 acres. It has a frontage to the sea for a considerable distance, and is admirably adapted for cattle grazing purposes, in connection with a large tract of leasehold property held by Mr. Reid. The stock turned out from Mr. Reid's run are fine healthy animals and command good prices at the saleyards. Mr. Reid crops a small piece of land for his own immediate requirements. He also keeps an accommodation house, which is so situated that it is a boon to travellers, who have to pass along the “Seventy Mile Beach.” It is plainly visible from the sandy beach, and the weary wayfarer finds in Mrs. Reid an admirable hostess. Horses, too, are well fed and cared for at the adjoining stables. Mr. Reid was born in the Cape of Good Hope, in 1864, and came to New Zealand with his parents, when he was four years of age. He spent the early part of his life in Auckland, and afterwards became engaged in stock dealing at Ahipara. Mr. Reid took up “Hukatere” in 1892.
