Mr. George Herbert Elliott

Mr. George Herbert Elliott. Headmaster of the Canterbury College School of Art, hails from Brightford, page 166 Yorkshire, where he was born in 1861. Educated at Brightford Grammar School, and at South Kensington, London, Mr. Elliott qualified as an art master for which he holds a South Kensington certificate. In 1880, he gained a gold medal for still life painting, having in the previous year taken a silver medal for light and shade from ornamentation. Before leaving England for New Zealand, he was second master of the Brightford Grammar School. He arrived in Lyttelton per ship “Waimate” in 1881, and after a few months joined the staff of the school as second master, and on the retirement of Mr. David Blair from the headmastersip, was promoted to the vacancy. Mr. Elliott was married in December, 1893, to a daughter of Mr. W. Harrison, of Christchurch, and has two sons.
