Mr. Robert Hardie

Mr. Robert Hardie, Manager and Secretary of the New Zealand Farmers' Cooperative Association, is a native of Ayrshire, Scotland. He was brought up as an accountant in Glasgow, and arrived in Auckland in 1865. Mr. Hardie was for nine years in the North Island of New Zealand, and in 1874 removed to Christchurch, where, shortly after his arrival, he received the appointment of accountant to Messrs P. Cunningham and Co., general grain merchants, and subsequently acted in a similar capacity to the New Zealand Grain Agency Company, Limited. Mr. Hardie was for some time in business as a public accountant in Chrischurch, but in 1892 he joined the staff of the New Zealand Farmers' Co-operative Association, Limited, as accountant, which position he held until page 331 appointed manager and secretary in 1899. He is a member of the Masonic Order, and was initiated in Auckland in Lodge Waitemata, E.C. He was for six years a member of the Linwood Town Board, and for two years of that time acted as chairman. Mr. Hardie married a daughter of the late Mr. Thomas Hancock, brewer, of Newmarket, Auckland, and has four sons and three daughters living.
