Old Colonists.

Mr. Colin More, sometime of “Castle Hill,” North Loburn, was born in Inverness-shire, Scotland, and was educated at Polmaly school. For a time he was engaged in a railway workshop and afterwards on a farm He left the Old Country in 1863, in the ship “Brother's Pride,” and reached Lyttelton after a voyage of 140 days. The passengers then had to endure a month in quarantine. After he came to Christchurch, Mr. More worked for Mr. Kruse, at Papanui, for seven years, and for Mr. Robert Duncan, Island Hill, Loburn, for three years. He was the first man engaged

page 523 to clear the ground for the building of the Christchurch Normal School, and while working there he noticed the land was toc soft to support the foundations of the school When he directed the architect's attention to this fact, the entire plans were re-drawn to provide for a broader foundation. For seventeen years he managed the estate of Mrs Daniels, Kipilow farm, Papanui, after which he retired to “Castle Hill,” North Loburn. In 1889 he married Miss Agnes Gibb, daughter of the late Mr. David Gibb, Marshland, and had two daughters. Mr. and Mrs More always took an active interest in the Presbyterian Church at Papanui and elsewhere. Mr. More died on the 22nd of November, 1901, aged fifty-six years.
