page 629 built in the early days as a grocery store, and the other, a spacious two-storied building of a later design. The entire house contains twenty-two rooms, the older part being occupied by the bar, smoking room, dining room and kitchen, and the newer portion by well appointed bedrooms, well furnished public and private sitting rooms, and a bathroom. Two pinons are at the disposal of visitors. The management of the hotel is excellent. Mr. Brownie looks after the Bar, while Mrs Brownie personally supervises the other departments; and every care is taken to secure the comfort and ensure the enjoyment of lodgers. The grounds around are prettily planted, and were specially laid out for the convenience of picnic parties and holiday-makers. “Ocean View” is situated on the top side of the road, almost immediately above the wharf, and commands a fine view of the hilly country behind, and the Lyttelton harbour in front. Governor's Bay is in direct communication with Lyttelton by telephone, coach and steamer, and receives a mail twice a day.
