Mr. Augustus William Maurais

Mr. Augustus William Maurais , who has been secretary to the Dunedin Theosophical Society since its foundation, is an enthusiastic member of that body. In addition to managing the business affairs of the Society, he frequently takes the platform in advocacy, of theosophy, and is an able and popular exponent of the subject. Mr. Maurais was born in London in 1858, educated privately, and was afterwards apprenticed to the printing trade. In 1875 he sailed for New Zealand, and was for some years engaged in the printing offices of the North page 191 Otago Times and the Oamaru Mail, and later on, after spending twelve months in a coastal trading vessel, found employment in the printing office of the Dunedin “Evening Star.” Subsequently he entered into partnership with two experienced journalists to establish the Popotunoa Chronicle at Clinton, where he assisted to conduct that paper for about eighteen months, and then rejoined the “Star” staff in Dunedin. Mr. Maurais was appointed to his present post as Town Clerk of Ravensbourne, near Dunedin, in May, 1899. Before his appointment Mr. Maurais had been a member of the Ravensbourne Borough Council for about fourteen years, and filled the post of Mayor of the borough for one year.
