Mr. John Bell
Mr. John Bell
, who came out to Otago by the “Philip Laing,” was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1823. On arriving in New Zealand he first settled at Inchclutha, where he engaged in farming, but he afterwards
moved to the North Taieri, where he purchased 300 acres, which then included the famous Wairongia Springs (now in the possession of Thomson and Co.), of which he was

the discoverer, and farms now owned by Messrs R. Gawn and R. Smaillie. In 1860 Mr. Bell was married, his wife having come out by the “Alpine” in 1859, and he took his bride home in a dray drawn by six bullocks. Having some time previously purchased land at Woodside, he let his places at East Taiori and lived on his rents. As his family grew up, they cultivated the land at Woodside, clearing the bush, and carrying on mixed farming. At his death in 1887, Mr. Bell left a family of four sons and three daughters.
