Song For Two Trampers

Song For Two Trampers

It was to be remembered at the day's end
When talk flows like water down the gorge at night,
With soaked clothes dripping dark from the rafters,
Flame-light lapping round hill-tired faces,

How these two, defying all storm,
Stepped out from Alpha that dark cold morning,
Stepped off upward, in the pride of their bodies,
Up through leatherwood, snow-grass, mist,

Following the line of the peaks, with sleet into their faces,
The ridge lifting away into the driving mist,
Fought, with the depths of Satan almost hidden either side,
The thief-wind beating out the blood's precious heat.

Beyond the summit of Hector their long fighting ended;
The sky's blown leaves piled white above them.
The towns stand empty, wind batters the walls.
There is not one of us not so much poorer by their dying.
