Song for a Girl
Song for a Girl
Heaven was in his eyes
but earth was his body;
and I, long taught to despise
love's cloth for shoddy,
I put his hand from my breast
and dreamed of Sunday best.
Now lying beside my lover
I bless the strong soil
that gave him limbs to cover
with wine and oil
mine that so long have lain
wearing the dark like a stain.
