Although this article is based on the Wellington waterfront, much of it could apply to the ports of Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin, which offer the same spectacles of big liners and cockleboats, huge mechanical equipment and handbarrows and varied life and colour that belong to the coming and going of ships.
