New Zealand Industrial Exhibition, Dunedin, 1865.

The Provincial Government having accepted an invitation to have the Geological Survey of Canterbury represented in the New Zealand Industrial Exhibition, to be held at Dunedin in the beginning of 1865, I prepared a number of geological and botanical specimens, maps, and sections for exhibition, and proceeded on January 27th, 1865, to Dunedin, for the preparation of the necessary show-cases, and to study the contents of the Exhibition, which, considering the shortness of time and the limited resources of the Colony, may be pronounced to have been a most remarkable success. It doubtless marked a great stage in the history of the Colony, as here, for the first time, all its principal resources, and many of them of no mean order, could be examined under one roof. I also paid a visit to the principal goldfields of the Province of Otago, and returned to Canterbury towards the middle of February, when I devoted several days to a geological examination of the Timaru district, in reference to obtaining a supply of water for that town. A report on the subject^* was handed to the Provincial Government, and printed in the same year, in which the result of my researches in respect to this important question are given.
