Translation of the foregoing receipt.

Know all men by this deed that we, Te Aupouri, of Takaka and Motupipi; A Ngaru, of Motupipi; Ko Hoka, of Tata; Ko Tuturau, of Puremuaia; Ko Wiremu, of Rangiata; Ko te Meihana, of Takaka; and Tamati Pirimona, of Aorere; and also those whose names are signed to this deed, being the men of the Taitapu (or Massacre Bay); hereby acknowledge to have received from Donald Sinclair, Esq., Chief Police Magistrate of the district of Nelson, New Zealand, on the day of the date of these presents, the full sum of £290, in full compensation and satisfaction of all claims and demands we now have or ever had upon or in respect of all the lands known by the name of the Massacre Bay district, and the several places and lands above-mentioned. And, in consideration of such payment, we, for ourselves and each of us, and our and each of our heirs, hereby release and for ever quit claim to all the lands above-named, as the same were awarded by, Mr. Commissioner Spain, and the plans signed by him, and agree to yield up forthwith peaceable possession of all the said lands to the New Zealand Company and their assigns, and this we severally do in pursuance of the award of William Spain, Esq., Commissioner of Land Claims. As witness our respective hands at Motupipi aforesaid, this 23rd day of May, in the year of our Lord 1846.
