Obituary — John Edward Tomlinson

Obituary
John Edward Tomlinson

A very well known figure in the Nelson and Marlborough back country passed away near the end of 1987 having attained the great age of 96 years.

John Edward Tomlinson came to Tophouse as a boy when his parents bought the Tophouse Hotel and over the years he saw the pioneer farming development in that area. Fortunately he recorded a great deal about life in the country and his book, Remembered Trails, is of wonderful interest to the people who are keen on local history. His further writings, People and Places, has been presented in Jeff Newport's latest book, More Footprints. Mr Tomlinson's memory of people and events, his own experiences as a musterer, soldier, farmer, and family man, has helped to preserve much of our heritage. He and his wife were highly respected in the Kikiwa area where they raised a large family during the hard times between the two World Wars.
