STACK, James West 1835–1919

Born at a Maori pa, Puriri, Thames, eldest son of Wesleyan missionary James Stack. Spent early boyhood at mission stations Mangapouri, Te Papa (Tauranga) and East Cape: had a year at

St John's College, Auckland. To England via Sydney 1847 but after death of mother 1850 entered Training College of C.M.S. in London and in 1852 returned to New Zealand as assistant to Dr R. Maunsell at lower Waikato and Te Kohanga mission stations. In 1859 he was appointed missionary to Canterbury Maoris; ordained 1861. In about 1900 retired and went to Italy to live, in 1907 to England. Published works relating to Maoris and to his own life. A sketch is reproduced in More Maoriland Adventures, the second of three volumes pub. 1934–38 of his recollections edited by A. H. Reed. Pencil drawings of Canterbury buildings are in Turnbull.
