POWER, Peter

Born Ireland: arrived in Dunedin before 1865 when as a Dunedin painter exhibited in the NZ Ex Dunedin a portrait and a landscape. He was listed (as T. Power) as a Dunedin artist 1866–67 in Stevens & Bartholomew Directory; in 1875–78 and 1883–84 Wise's. Exhibited with OAS 1876, 1877 then not again until 1883–90, though a “T. Power” exhibited in Canterbury 1891. O'Keeffe wrote of Power as a jolly old Irishman, who, if he sold a picture, gave a party. He painted landscapes and had a fancy for the big black trees which then were very prolific in Woodhaugh Valley and what was then called Pine Hill. Represented: OESA, Hocken.
