PRIDEAUX, Editha Greville (Mrs E. G. Foster) c.1869–1953

Travelied widely with parents as a child before they settled in Auckland: began to exhibit oils with ASA 1887 and was looked upon as painter of great promise. 1895 went to London to study art. Married William Arthur Foster about 1904, was at first occupied by her two daughters but later and after her husband died went back to painting. Was friendly with Augustus John, Mark Gertler, and Stanley Spence whose neighbour she was when he was painting his famous “Ressurection” 1923–26: he borrowed her nightgowns to clothe his women who were rising out of the graves. After the 1939–45 war returned to New Zealand accompanied by her daughter Greville Texidor who became known for a period as a New Zealand writer. She died in Australia. Exhibited: ASA 1887–94.
