Note of Acknowledgment

I have to thank Messrs. Coulls Somerville Wilkie Ltd., of Dunedin, New Zealand, for the colour blocks of Lake Marian, which were used in their publication Yesterday and Today in Otago (1940). For the other scenic illustrations acknowledgment is made to the Public Relations Department of the High Commissioner for New Zealand. For the portraits of Sir Harry Atkinson and the Hon. John McKenzie from the earlier editions acknowledgment is repeated to Messrs. Sampson Low & Co.

By responding to my request to write an introduction to this edition of The Long White Cloud, Sir James Hight added yet one more to the many kindnesses he has extended to me and one more to his many services to students of the complicated but fascinating history of New Zealand.
