New Zealand Studies: A Guide to Bibliographic Resources

8. Maori music

8. Maori music

The standard bibliographic source for Maori music is Mervyn McLean's An Annotated Bibliography of Oceanic Music and Dance (Polynesian Society, 1977. Memoir no. 14; Supplement, 1981). Dr McLean has built up the premier collection of recordings of Maori music in the Archive of Maori and Pacific Music at the Department of Anthropology, University of Auckland, and this is recognized as the national collection in the field. Through a number of detailed card indexes a high level of internal bibliographic control has been achieved. The only published list from the Archive is the Catalogue of Maori Purposes Fund Board Recordings: Recorded by W. T. Ngata 1953-1958 (1983).
