Deaths.

Following is the list of the fatal casualties suffered by the Auckland Mounted Rifles Regiment. In the absence of a list issued officially by the Government, the information cannot be accepted in every case as absolutely definite and final, but from the information in possession of the Regiment, it is believed to be substantially accurate. It compiling the list, the following system has been followed:—The place where the death occurred follows the number, name, and rank of the soldier; then the date, then the cause where that information is known, and finally the place of burial, where definite information is available on that point. In the many cases where no reference is made to the place of burial, it does not mean that the graves of the men have not been located. It is believed that in a large number of cases the graves have been located, but the final place of interment has not yet been reported. The contractions used are fairly obvious, "K. in A." means "killed in action;" "D. of W." means "died of wounds;" "D. of D." means "died of disease," fever accounting for many deaths under this heading. Where the term "Deceased (C. of E.)" is used, definite information as to the cause of death has been lacking, Courts of Enquiry having found that death took place on or about the dates mentioned. From the nature of the Gallipoli campaign, in some actions of which units were cut down to mere handfuls of men, many of such enquiries were inevitable, although survivors had every reason for believing that missing comrades were killed in action during advances over broken and well-nigh impossible country.
