240 — General Freyberg to the Minister of Defence

240
General Freyberg to the Minister of Defence

14 June 1940

With reference to the powers vested in me by Cabinet,1 I have authorised the following temporary detachments: Firstly, four officers, 100 other ranks from Divisional Signals to form Egypt Force signal headquarters in the Western Desert. Secondly, I have agreed, in conjunction with the Australian Imperial Force, in the event of a crisis [affecting?] the Egyptian railways to lend temporarily two officers and 100 other ranks to take over and help run the State railways. Thirdly, I have agreed to help Lines of Communication, Western Desert, by the temporary loan of motor transport and drivers. As these detachments are for a short duration and the troops concerned sufficiently trained and equipped, I have agreed subject to Cabinet's approval. Shall I notify each small detachment or use my discretion upon minor and unimportant detachments?
