My telegram of 16 May (No. 405). The plan for the safety of the King and the Government has been altered at the King's request and with my approval. He will remain in the house in the hills to the south with a platoon of New Zealanders as guard in addition to the Greeks, all under the command of Colonel Blunt.² In an emergency, they will cover the party's retreat to the southern port of Ag Rumeli, twenty-five miles due south of Canea, which can be reached by tracks, and where arrangements would have to be made for their evacuation by flying boat or warship. Please inform me if these plans are approved.
