the author: Joseph F. Cody was born in Melbourne in 1895, educated at Sacred Heart College, Auckland, and went overseas in 1915 with 4th Reinforcements. He served throughout the First World War with 1st Canterbury Battalion and was awarded the Military Medal and commissioned. Between wars he was engaged in commerce, and on the outbreak of the Second World War was appointed to the New Zealand Temporary Staff. On the cessation of hostilities he joined the civil service and is at present on the staff of the Social Security Department in Wellington. He is the author of a biography of Sir Maui Pomare and is at present writing the history of the Maori Battalion.
