the author: Lieutenant-Colonel Angus Ross, MC and Bar, ED, m.i.d., Aristion Andrias (Greek), served in the 23rd Battalion as platoon commander, as Intelligence Officer and liaison officer for short periods, as Adjutant from September 1942 to July 1943 and as company commander from August 1943 to January 1944. After being sent to the Staff College, Camberley, he served as Brigade Major of the 5th Brigade till the end of 1944. In the post-war New Zealand Army, he was Brigade Major of the 3rd Infantry Brigade from 1949 till 1951 and Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion, The Otago and Southland Regiment, from February 1951 to March 1954. He was also Hon. ADC to the Governor-General, Lord Freyberg, from April 1951 to July 1952. In civilian life, since his school days at Waitaki Boys' High School, Dr Ross has devoted most of his time to the study of history. In 1933 he graduated MA with first-class honours in History from the University of Otago. In 1947–49 he studied at King's College, Cambridge, where he took his Ph.D. He is now Reader (i.e., Associate Professor) in History at the University of Otago.
