General Freyberg to the Prime Minister of New Zealand

4 June 1943

There is no doubt that the New Zealand Government's decision to keep the 2nd NZEF in the Middle East has been welcomed on all sides.1 The scheme for the return of personnel on leave has worked smoothly and has been very well received by the men generally.

I expect to leave here by air on 6 or 7 June, travelling via England, which is the fastest route.

1 General Freyberg was advised of this decision on 22 May. See Furlough Scheme (No. 261).
