the author was born at Palmerston North and educated at New Plymouth Boys' High School and Canterbury' University College. He trained as a teacher and practised that profession in New Zealand, Australia, the Fiji Islands and London. For thirty years he has been a contributor to New Zealand and overseas magazines and newspapers. He served for a time on the staff of the NZEF Times in Italy, editing the contributors' page (‘Off Parade’) and being responsible for the distribution of the newspaper. He returned to teaching after the war, but after two years ‘pulled up sticks’ and roamed for five years in England and Australia, doing various jobs besides teaching, writing and broadcasting. On returning to New Zealand in 1953, he worked for about eighteen months with the Tourist and Publicity Department as a journalist before resuming teaching in 1955. He is the author of two other works, Knowing Australia, a social studies text for Australian schools, and Unique To New Zealand, a handbook for students and tourists.
