the author: W. Wynne Mason, MC, went overseas with the Second Echelon and served with the 2nd New Zealand Division in Greece, Crete, and the Western Desert until capture in the Second Libyan Campaign. Born in Wellington in 1910, he was educated at Scots College and Victoria University College, where he graduated BA (Philosophy) and later MA (Modern Languages). Before the war he spent some years in law, farming and language teaching. After repatriation in 1946 he worked on the present history with the War History Branch of the Department of Internal Affairs and later joined the Department of External Affairs. He served from 1949 to 1951 as Second Secretary at the New Zealand Legation in Paris, and is now on the staff of the High Commissioner's Office in London.
