PRISONERS OF WAR (blurb)

   During the Second World War
approximately 9140 New Zealanders
were taken prisoner, 194 of them
sailors, 8348 soldiers and 598 airmen,
including those interned. Of these,
1270 soldiers were wounded when
captured, of whom 107 died in cap-
tivity. A further 416 soldiers died
from sickness, accident, and other
causes.

The great majority of the soldier
prisoners were captured in the disasters
of the first three years, left on the
beaches in Greece or Crete, or were
members of units overrun by German
tanks. The airmen were those who
survived after being shot down over
enemy territory.

Their record as prisoners is a
magnificent one, an honourable chapter
in New Zealand's history, carefully
and thoroughly related in this volume.
